A rare and wonderful find for some curiosity collector! This is an Antique Field Microscope Eyepiece Tool. A wonderful scientific tool. Antique drum microscope is circa 1880 - 1900 and was used by naturalists or students when working in the field. It has a simple push and pull focus that works with a single objective lens, a screw-on eyepiece, a small reflective mirror and is made of lacquered brass. There's a certain fascination that comes with holding and operating this antique field or travel microscope. Made almost entirely of brass, the microscope is elegantly simple to use and in great working order. 3 objective lenses made in a threaded nesting style and 1 eyepiece lens. The optics are still very clear and threaded for easy removal. The microscope comes apart easily into sections. Naturally, the brass shows tarnishing and wear. The mirror is in very good condition and pivots easily with some age spots. Exact age and manufacturer unknown, but we can tell you the microscope was acquired from a private seller and collector of antiques.

A microscope to look" or "see") is an instrument used to see objects that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Microscopy is the science of investigating small objects and structures using such an instrument. Microscopic means invisible to the eye unless aided by a microscope.
Although objects resembling lenses date back 4000 years and there are Greek accounts of the optical properties of water–filled spheres (5th century BC) followed by many centuries of writings on optics, the earliest known use of simple microscopes (magnifying glasses) dates back to the widespread use of lenses in eyeglasses in the 13th century.
